In the event that the 31st Congress of the SIU cannot be held due to events beyond the control of the organizers (force majeure), or due to events which are not attributable to wrongful intent or gross negligence of the organizers, the organizers cannot be held liable for any damages, costs or losses incurred, such as transportation, accommodation, or financial losses.
Under these circumstances, the organizers reserve the right to either retain the entire registration and/or hotel deposit, or to reimburse the delegate after deducting costs already incurred for the organization of the 31st Congress of the SIU and which could not be recovered from third parties. It is therefore recommended that you take out insurance covering health and accident, loss of baggage and cancellation (trip and registration).
Entry RequirementsMost EU citizens only need their national identity card or passport to enter Germany. Non-EU citizens require a valid passport to enter Germany, but many countries are exempt from tourist visas. It is essential that you check with the German embassy or consulate in your country before travelling. Without exception, passports must be valid for at least four months after your planned date of departure from Germany.
The SIU will not directly contact embassies and consulates on behalf of applicants. It is the sole responsibility of the delegates to look after their visa requirements.
Getting to the SIUBerlin’s Tegel airport is the main international point of entry, and is located 8km (5 mi.) northwest of the city. A taxi from the airport to the city should be no more than €20, for a 15-20-minute ride. Public transport is easy to find and available for about €2. Berlin’s Central Train Station is also a convenient way into the city for European travellers.

TaxesAs a rule, all goods and services in Germany are subject to value-added tax (VAT). VAT in Germany is 19%. On certain items (food, books, transportation, etc.) a reduced tax rate of 7% applies. VAT will be applied to the registration fees, social events, tours and hotel rooms purchased for the Congress.
Time ZoneBerlin is in the Central European time zone (GMT +1).
TippingTips are already included in restaurant bills, but it is customary to round up an extra 10% if you are satisfied with the service. Similarly, expect to tip taxi drivers around 10%. Porters are generally tipped 1€ per bag.
